Caique Parts

The wooden objects in this case are decorative elements from caiques which no longer exist. Once, these pieces would have adorned the prows, broadside plankings and castles (the raised platforms on the hull of the ship). When this collection of Imperial Caiques was originally exhibited in 1970 these broken and lost pieces were collected and preserved separately. Even though the caiques they once belonged to no longer survive, these parts have been preserved and exhibited so that visitors may see in detail some of the minor elements and carvings.

Without their original context it may be hard to imagine their original placement but as you explore this gallery of caiques can you find similar elements on the intact caiques? Did they serve any practical function or were they purely decorative? Why would the Sultan and the Imperial family spend so much money to decorate their boats?
