Sorry it took me so long to post! It totally slipped my mind.
Westward expansion and the taming of the frontier lands is a quintessential chapter in American history, and for me this image is inextricably tied to those ideas. I also like the irony in the fact that Remington never really lived in the west, but only traveled there to sketch and observe, then returned to Brooklyn to create his artworks. The wild west is a huge part of America's historical identity, and yet even now the country remains largely oriented to the major cities in the Northeast.
