Pendleton House At Night
I am pitching my own very simple idea for Gallery Night which probably would not be approved by the powers that be but I really liked the idea so wanted to put it out in the universe to see what would happen. My idea is for us to turn all the lights off in Pendleton House and use candles (not real ones but those fake bulb ones) to light the house as it would have been light in the 18th/ 19th centuries. I have been reading a book called At Home by Bill Byrson which has been inspiring much of my thought recently and in one chapter he details just how dark the world was before electricity, something although obvious is not something I had really contemplated before. I thought it would be a fascinating sensory experience to experience Pendleton House in the same way people of that time would have. In order to minimize any potential hazard to this plan we would lead guided tours through the house to make sure everyone and everything remains safe. The tour we would give would give information inspired by Bill Byrson explaining how dark it was and evoking the atmosphere. We would encounter objects and discuss how differently we experience them in the relative darkness.
