I have an article from a 1945 edition of the RISD Museum notes that discusses an exhibition at the time called Old and New England. The thesis of the exhibition was to explore early New England painters next to their English counterparts to see if there was an American style of painting or it was just a provincial off shoot of the English style at the time. I thought it may be useful to review as we consider some similar topics for our final project.
